February was Heart Month, a time to bring attention to the importance of cardiovascular health, and what we can do to reduce our risk of cardiovascular disease. We encourage our readers to be mindful of their mental health and to talk to someone they trust, and if need be, to seek professional help. Our goal is to give our readers ways to maintain optimal mental, physical and emotional well-being to help them stay forever young!
Heart disease is one of the leading causes of death in Canada and the world over. The goal of Heart Month is to help raise awareness of heart-related diseases and causes while encouraging Canadians to live healthy lifestyles. Heart diseases for the most part are lifestyle diseases and can be prevented unless they are genetic. However, it is also proven that you can change your gene expression by living a more healthy lifestyle. About 80 percent of the risk factors are within your control so living a healthy lifestyle can be a great advantage.
We have discussed many ways on how to maintain optimal health and wellness. Some of the risk factors include age, sex, overweight, obesity, physical inactivity, poor diet, that is high cholesterol, hypertension, smoking, lifestyle, ethnicity, and genetics.
Lifestyle change is the most important thing to do to attain optimal health and help us prevent, reverse or manage heart diseases and other lifestyle diseases like diabetes, obesity, chronic gut inflammation, and so on. Other things include quitting smoking, getting regular exercise, eating diets that are rich in fiber, rainbow-colored fruits, and vegetables, reducing our sugar and salt intake, eating food in its original state that is minimizing processed foods, eating foods that are rich in omega-three. And remember walnuts, they are very rich in omega-three fatty acid.
