This summer is shaping up to be a very hot one as we approach the middle of the season. While enjoying the summer weather, we hope our readers and listeners are wearing sunscreen and staying hydrated. On the most recent episode of the Forever Young podcast, we discussed how to enjoy outdoor summer activities and how we can all participate in them no matter our age. You can listen to the full podcast episode below or keep reading to find out how to enjoy outdoor summer activities and also stay safe in this hot weather. Whether you are happily aging, or you are a friend or relative of a senior, there are summer activities to try no matter what your age or level of mobility.

It is especially worthwhile to enjoy the summer weather in a colder climate like Canada since it is not always sunny and warm throughout the year. Even though life can get busy, it is important to get outside and enjoy some fresh air. Not only does it feel good to get outside, but social engagement has been shown to improve our mental and physical well-being and even prolong our lives.

Walking is a great summer activity for seniors. Even just for a short distance, walking can improve physical and mental wellbeing, which is why Christiana encourages her residents to go for a walk, water plants in the garden or even just sit outside. So walking, jogging, or even rollerskating are all great ways to get outside, get some fresh air, and keep your body and mind in shape. Going on regular walks can improve your physical health, and as well as allow you to socialize with others which helps improve your overall wellbeing.

Another favorite summer activity is going to the beach or park. This can be a great way to relax, get some sun, and maybe even have fun in the water! Vitamin D is necessary for our muscle and bone function, which is why spending an adequate amount of time in the sun is so important. Especially for our seniors, a lack of vitamin D can lead to a greater risk of fracture and other side effects of vitamin D deficiency. Don't forget to wear sunscreen when going to places with direct sunlight exposure, such as the beach or the park. Make sure you bring an umbrella or a hat to provide some shade or even sit beside a tree. Swimming is also a great summer activity for seniors as it is very effective in preventing joint problems. Swimming is also a great way to relax and get your exercise in at the same time. Especially in this heat, splashing in the water can feel good, but it is also good for your mental and physical health.

Gardening is also a great summer activity that can also be followed on to other seasons throughout the year, with specific knowledge and care for your plants. Apart from relaxation and spending time outdoors, gardening also gives one a sense of purpose as it can be seen as giving life to something or as a new birth. It is a great activity for seniors and children alike as it can be very educational and it can also help one feel more encouraged to eat fresh foods from their own garden.

If gardening is not in your interest, going to the farmer's market is a great summer activity! Visiting the Farmers Market is a great way to get a little bit of exercise in by browsing through the booths, and even grabbing lunch and it is also a great way to support small businesses and farmers alike. Farmers' markets provide local and fresh products such as meat, dairy products such as milk and cheese, fruits, vegetables, and more. Berry picking is another fun summer activity to try with your senior friend or relative. There is nothing greater than picking fresh fruits directly from their source. There are many farms across the GTA that provide berry picking tours which is a great activity for anyone to enjoy.

Another fun summer activity is to watch movies, whether it be indoors or outdoors. Drive-in theatres are popular during the summertime and there are a few across the GTA. Get your own snacks, some friends or family, and check out the closest drive-in movie theater to you to enjoy a fun summer night. Movies can help you relax after a day out in the sun and they can also help escape reality or even simply be a great time with friends or family!

We discussed a lot of fun ideas that people can do to keep themselves healthy, happy and active during the remainder of the summer season. Remember these activities are not just about exercise, it is about taking a break, relaxing, and most importantly, putting the FUN into your summer! We hope our readers stay healthy and safe, as well as hydrated and protected from the sun. Don't forget your sunscreen and SPF protection!
